UPC (Universal Product Code) and EAN (European Article Number) are unique product barcodes assigned to a music release — album, EP, or single. While ISRC works at the track level, UPC/EAN operates at the release (product) level.
UPC vs EAN
UPC is the 12-digit American barcode standard. EAN-13 is the 13-digit international version. Both formats are accepted in digital music distribution; most platforms prefer the 13-digit EAN format.
When Is It Required?
- Each new album, EP, or single release needs a UPC/EAN
- Different releases containing the same tracks (e.g. deluxe edition) must have different UPCs
- When a single-track release is later added to an album, the album gets a new UPC
